TRAINING TO STAY

For the best control, keep the leash and collar on your puppy  when he is out of the crate and have him supervised at all times.   Corrections can be done immediately and he won't learn the habit of running away when you reach to handle him.  Remove the leash and collar before returning him to the crate to avoid hanging accidents.

Puppy's Favorite Treats

This command is used in conjunction with your other commands.  After teaching sit and down, continue the lessons by teaching them to stay for longer and longer periods of time.

After giving the command to sit or down, keep your leash slightly taut, to keep your pup from moving, then put the palm of your hand out in front of your pup's face.  Say "Stay", hold your hand there, and start out by counting to three in your mind,  then say "o.k." to release.  Immediately give your treat.  Gradually lengthen the time by counting to twenty.

When your puppy is consistently staying for twenty, start pulling on the leash, if they move out of position say "ah ah", move them back into position and make them stay.  This is important if someone else is handling your dog and they accidentally pull the leash.

When your puppy stays as the leash is being pulled, start building the stay with your being one step away.  Keeping one foot in front of your puppy, step and lean back with the other foot, keeping your palm in front of his face.  If he moves, lean your body back towards your puppy, say "ah ah", and put him back into position.  Step back again, count, then step back towards the puppy to release with "o.k." and reward.   Build on this until you are several yards away and he stays consistently.  I would not call him to you at this point but always return to release then reward.

Now it is time to add distractions.  Start by placing your puppy into a sit, say "stay" and walk around him in both directions.  If he moves, say "ah ah", place him back into position and continue. At the down, practice slowly stepping over and around your puppy in both directions.  This builds trust in your puppy as he learns that he will not be harmed as you move around him.  Giving verbal praise may cause your dog to move from position, reposition and praise, he will get used to it.

Since your puppy now has the basics, build on this foundation by having your puppy stay when other people, dogs, puppies or cats are passed by him, or if toys are thrown in front of him.  Make his stays into a game by walking around the corner then calling your puppy to you for a reward and eventually playing hide and seek with you.  Make these training times fun with lots of praise and treats for rewards, your dog will love it!
