TRAINING TO WATCH ME

For the best control, keep the leash and collar on your puppy  when he is out of the crate and have him supervised at all times.   Corrections can be done immediately and he won't learn the habit of running away when you reach to handle him.  Remove the leash and collar before returning him to the crate to avoid hanging accidents.

Getting and keeping your dog's attention is the cornerstone for all training.  The first thing to train your puppy is to "Watch Me".

Keep in mind that in a dog's world, looking at another dog or person in the eyes is considered threatening so be patient while teaching this command.  Some puppies are very uncomfortable looking other dogs or people in the eyes.  As you gain your puppy's trust, he will learn how to look you in the eye when you call and look for your next command.

Start off by having the leash and collar on your puppy and treats in hand.  When your puppy is looking away, call his name.  Right as he turns his head to look at you, say "Watch Me", then give the treat.  When the puppy is dong that consistently, start luring the treat up towards your eyes to teach him to look you in the eye.  Right when he looks into your eyes (even if it's just a fraction of a second), reward with the treat.  Hold the treat near your eyes for longer and longer periods of time, before rewarding, to teach him to keep looking until you give your next command.
