Weimaraner Nursery

This page is still in the works (the pictures need to be taken and added) but I thought it might be helpful to list this part for now.

Below are some grooming ideas to help keep Weimaraners looking their best!  A lot of people think that because Weimaraner's  have a short coat, there isn't much care involved.  In fact, I have searched all over the internet and in books exclusively about Weimaraners and coat care doesn't seem to be covered that well.   True, Weimaraners aren't as high maintenance as a long-coated breed would be, but you can take your Weim from average to sleek and shiny with the following tips:

A beautiful coat starts on the inside!

Make the investment to feed your dog a high quality food with a long-standing reputation for research and healthy ingredients.  Check the label to make sure that there are no artificial colors, additives or preservatives.  Ask your vet and friends what feed they recommend and have had good results with.  We add one squeezed capsule of Omega 3, 6, 9 oil to their feed each day to help develop healthy skin and a beautiful, shiny coat.

Start your grooming session by gathering everything that you will need:

Grooming Table Or A Table With A Rubber Mat
Ear Cleansing Solution (ProEar Is A Great Product With A Nice Smell)
  Q-Tips
  Ear Mite Medicine (If Needed)
  Paper Towels
Shampoo (Formulated For Canines - I Recommend Biogroom Products)
Conditioner (Formulated For Canines - I Recommend Biogroom Products)
  White Vinegar
  Towels
  Nail Clippers
  Styptic Powder
  Scissors
Hacksaw Blade (I Know, This Sounds Really Weird, But It Works!)
  Zoom Groom Tool
  Mink Oil Spray
  Fine Bristle Brush

Clean the ears.

I clean the ears first so that when they are getting their bath, the sour smell is washed away.  Dirty ears are one of  the main causes for ear infections, ear mites, yeast infection and that doggy smell that many dogs seem to always have.

Hold the ear up and forward then put several drops of ear cleanser in an ear canal(ProEar is a Top Performance Brand product that is professionally formulated to remove ear wax and reduce ear odors, can be used for dogs or cats).  Massage the base of the ear.  Let fluid remain in the ear canal for a few seconds.  Allow pet to shake out residue.  Do the other ear.

Next, use Q-Tips to remove the dirt and debris, being careful not to go too deep into the ear canal (which can cause serious damage).

Use a paper towel to wipe out the excess cleaner and leftover residue.

Bathe your Weimaraner.

Use warm water to completely rinse out your Weimaraner.  When the water runs clear, fill a plastic pitcher and add shampoo, mix well and pour over and massage into the coat .  (I like Biogroom shampoo it  does an excellent job).  Avoid getting water inside the ear canals, rinse well.

For the final rinse, fill a plastic pitcher and add about 1/4 cup of vinegar, pour over the entire coat and under the ear area, then rinse again.  This helps remove any doggy smell.

Condition by filling a plastic pitcher and add conditioner, mix well and pour over and massage into the coat.  (I like the Coat Handler conditioner.  This is by far the best conditioner that I have found.  It leaves the coat soft and shiny).  You can actually leave the conditioner in unrinsed.

Dry with a soft absorbent towel.

Move your Weimaraner to the grooming table.

Train  your young puppy early on to stand still on the table for ease in grooming.

Make this an enjoyable experience!  Reward with treats and praise!

Trim, then file the nails while they are still soft from the bath.

Below are pictures of incorrectly and correctly trimmed nails.  It's important to keep the nails short so that the feet develop and stay nice and tight.  Long nails make the toes splay and turn the feet off to the side.  If your Weimaraner's nails are too long right now, focus on trimming them back a bit every week to get the vein inside the nail to recede back.  In case you trim the nail too short, and it starts to bleed, styptic powder can be used to stop the bleeding.  Put some of  the powder on your finger then press and hold it onto the end of the injured nail until the blood stops flowing.

Trim the whiskers, being careful not to injure your dog with the sharp scissor points.  I try to keep the eye covered with my hand just to make sure that they don't jerk and get their eye injured.

Stretch the skin so that it is tight, then clip the whiskers.

Remove the dead coat.

Use the Zoom Groom tool in a circular motion and against the lay of the coat to scruff up the dead coat.

This next point will sound very strange!  I have searched everywhere for a grooming tool to remove the dead, short coat on Weimaraners.  The zoom groom tool works well to scruff up dead coat , but I did not have good success with getting a nice finished look using just that.  After buying all different kinds of grooming tools (which didn't work!) I got the idea of using a hacksaw blade, which is a smaller version of the shedding blade that is used on horses.  Wow, when I saw how great this worked I couldn't believe it!  I've been kind of embarrassed to recommend this to people because it sounds ridiculous, but it really works!

Holding the blade with two hands, pull the serrated edges over the coat, being careful of bony areas over the shoulders, hips, and the top of the head.  I don't usually use this on the legs unless they absolutely need it (not usually).  You will find that one side strips better.  Flip the blade to see which side works best.  Usually this will need to be done during the shedding season only.

Use a small towel to go over the body to remove all of the loose dead coat.

Spray over the entire coat with mink oil spray conditioner.

Brush the mink oil into the coat with a soft bristle brush.

Hopefully these tips have been a help to you.  I'm always open to new suggestions so if you have any ideas that would improve things, let me know!  Enjoy your handsome guy or gal!
