Goldendoodles are a wonderful cross breed that can be a great choice of dog for those who have allergies, for those who want minimal to no shedding in their home and one that is family friendly and easily trained. As the news has gotten out about these eye-catching, sweet-tempered dogs, they have quickly gained in popularity in the United States and Canada. Not only are they easy to train and family friendly, there is a unique variety of available sizes, colors and coat textures that appeal to a wide range of people.

According to Wikipedia, the first claim of breeding Goldendoodles was in 1969 when Monica Dickens, great-granddaughter of Charles Dickens, crossed a Golden Retriever with a Poodle. Others claim that the Guide Dogs Victoria, in Australia, produced this cross in the 1980’s to meet the needs of a client with dog allergies. Another claim is that the cross started in the1990’s when dog breeders in Australia and the United States started to cross Golden Retrievers and Poodles to produce an allergy friendly alternative to the Labradoodle. In all of these cases, the resulting crosses proved to produce healthier animals than both parent breeds, due to the out-crossing to a greater gene pool and dogs suitable for those who suffer from dog allergies. The first mentioned claim of producing Mini Goldendoodles was by Amy Lane of Fox Creek Farm. The term "Goldendoodle" was coined by Amy and she established the Goldendoodle Association of North America. Teddybear English Goldendoodles were first produced by the Smeraglia family in the 1990’s when one of their family members was allergic to the English Cream Golden Retrievers that she showed and raised.

Okefeild Acre’s first American Goldendoodles were produced in 2006, just as the cross was starting to be more well known and growing in popularity. Finding it hard to find healthy bloodlines in American Golden Retrievers, Janet Wright turned to English Cream Golden Retrievers and brought in her first European imports to improve the health and looks of her Goldendoodle bloodlines. She wasn’t disappointed, the European English Cream Golden Retriever puppies, kept back from her own breedings, improved health, and her focus on conformation and coat type has produced a particular “look” that clients always make positive comments on.

Now specializing in unique color lines and temperament development of her English Teddybear Goldendoodle Puppies for therapy or service work, Janet continues to enjoy sharing her passion for raising these beautiful and sweet natured puppies and finds great joy in being able to offer these special babies to her new families!
